Placing students accurately is essential for effective teaching and coherent lesson planning.

This workshop offers a practical introduction to the CEFR and shows English teachers how to understand level descriptors, language competences, and performance indicators.

Rather than memorising labels, participants learn how to observe what learners can actually do in English, how to recognise linguistic evidence, and how to apply CEFR criteria responsibly.

We will examine samples of learner language, discuss common placement challenges, and consider how different institutions interpret levels in practice.

By the end of the session, teachers will feel more confident placing students objectively, adjusting expectations, and communicating placement decisions clearly to learners and stakeholders.
